Instructions to authors
Nordic Pulp & Paper Research Journal is published four times a year, in March, June, September and December.

Original manuscripts containing new significant results in the fields of science
and technology of wood constituents, pulp and paper, including new fiber-based materials, by-products from pulping processes, biorefining and energy issues, and not scheduled for publication elsewhere will be considered for publication. Reviews may also be accepted. The copyright of the published article belongs to the author(s). All manuscripts will be peer reviewed.

Publication charge
No publication charge

Manuscript preparation and submission
The paginated manuscript should be submitted by e-mail: info@npprj.se (or by other electronic media) as a Word-file with the location of figures clearly marked and with tables and equations included in the text. Photos, figures, tables and equations should also be supplied in one separate PDF-file. You are welcome to suggest a maximum of four reviewers.

English language
The manuscript must be linguistically correct English. Either American or British spelling may be used, the use of either should be consistent. Extensive use of acronyms not generally accepted should be avoided.

Keywords
4-8 adequate keywords should be given. As a guide to appropriate keywords the "Thesaurus of Pulp and Paper Terminology" edited by Institute of Paper Science and Technology, Atlanta, GA, USA, is recommended.

Summary
The Summary at the beginning of the paper should be informative, not merely indicative. It should briefly state the purpose of the work, the significant results and conclusions. The lenght of the summay should not exceed 200 words. Abbreviations should be avoided.

Addresses
Addresses (including e-mail addresses) at the time of publication should be given for each author in a special note after the Summary. Also specify Corresponding author.

EXAMPLE
ADDRESS(ES) OF THE AUTHOR(S): Rickard Granevald (rickard.granevald@kau.se) and Lars S. Nilsson (lars.nilsson@kau.se): Karlstad University, Department of Chemical Engineering, SE-651 88 Karlstad, Sweden. Stig Stenström (stig.stenstrom@kat.lth.se): Lund University, Department of Chemical Engineering, Box 124, SE-221 00 Lund, Sweden. Corresponding author: Rickard Granevald.

The IMRAD format
We urge the authors to follow the IMRAD principle whenever this is possible.

Introduction
Scope of the problem investigated. Review of pertinent literature. Method of investigation. State the aim of the work.

Materials and Methods
Give full details of all the experiments, so that they can be repeated. Results should not be reported here.

Results
Representative data should be presented. Methods should not be described here.

Discussion
Discuss interpretation of results, principles and relationships, and connections to previously published research work.

Conclusions
The significance of the work, Conclusions, should be presented at the end of the discussion in a separate section. Note that Conclusions are not the same thing as Summary.

Appendix
Special information, which impedes the flow of the paper can be given as an Appendix.

Illustrations
In artwork, chemical structures and graphs the lines must be sufficiently heavy and letters and symbols sufficiently large to be readily legible also when their size is reduced to the one in the printed article. For text and numbers in figures and axis titles, use a typeface sans serif , for example, Arial, Helvetica, Trebuchet MS or Verdana. Note that the width of a column in NPPRJ is 82 mm. Units used in diagrams should be given on the axes. The magnification of photomicrographs must be indicated, for example by a size bar. 3D figures should be avoided. The minimum resolution of pictures must be 300 dpi (no smaller than 10 cm width). Illustrations, figures, graphs etc. are accepted in colour or black/white.

Symbols and units
The international system of symbols and units (SI system) should be used throughout. Particular attention must be paid to the correct positioning in equations of subscripts, superscripts and mathematical signs. All symbols used in equations must be explained in the text or in a separate list of symbols. Each equation should be presented on a separate line and should be numbered. Long equations should be divided in order to fit into a column. The size of exponents and indices in equations should be 50% of the main letter. Use only Arabic numerals.

Name-year system for literature citations
References in the running text are identified by means of the author(s) name(s), followed by the year of publication written within parentheses. If there are three or more authors, the first name followed by "et al." is given.
Example: (Mao, Hartler 1992; Sandås et al. 1989).
If a reference is given in a running sentence write the year of publication within parentheses directly after the author(s).
Example: It was shown by Sandås et al. (1989) that...
If there are several publications by the same author(s) during one year, enumerate them by lower-case letters after the year, for example, 2005a, 2005b etc.
All references should be listed at the end of the article under heading "Literature" in alphabetic order according to the first author.

References to articles in periodicals should include the author’s name, year of publication, title of paper, abbreviated title of journal*, volume number, issue number, first page number. Example:
Mao, B. and Hartler, N. (1992): Improved modified kraft cooking, Nord. Pulp Paper Res. J. 7(4), 168.
Sandås, S.E., Salminen, P.J. and Eklund, D.E. (1989): Measuring the water retention of coating colors, Tappi J. 72(12), 207.
*Use CAS abbreviations of journal title; see http://www.cas.org/sent.html

Please note the following abbreviations:
Nordic Pulp and Paper Research Journal: Nord. Pulp Paper Res. J.
Journal of Pulp and Paper Science: J. Pulp Paper Sci.
Paperi ja Puu: Paperi Puu
Pulp and Paper Canada: Pulp Paper Mag. Can. From 1975 Pulp Paper Can.
Tappi: Tappi. From 1983 Tappi J.
